McCurtain County occupies Oklahoma’s far southeastern corner. The county itself was created at statehood in 1907, but the history of the land is far older. Before Oklahoma statehood, much of the area was within the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory. That earlier political and cultural landscape is essential to understanding Goodwater and the Whiteman family story.
Before McCurtain County existed
The region passed through several political eras. The Oklahoma Historical Society notes that portions were associated with old Miller County, Arkansas Territory, before becoming a significant part of the Choctaw Nation after removal from Mississippi. Choctaw sovereignty continued into the years immediately preceding Oklahoma statehood.
McCurtain County begins in 1907
At Oklahoma statehood, McCurtain County was established and Idabel became the county seat. The county name honored the prominent Choctaw McCurtain family. In 1907 the county population was 13,198, and transportation still depended heavily on wagon trails and ferries.
Railroads and new towns
The arrival of the Arkansas and Choctaw Railway in 1902 reshaped settlement. Valliant, Garvin, Purnell, later Idabel, and Harrington, later Haworth, were among communities surveyed and platted along the new transportation corridor.
Goodwater and the Whiteman Home
Goodwater belonged to the older network of trading-post and post-office communities that preceded the county. William Jourdan Whiteman settled there in 1893. The family dates the surviving Whiteman Home to that same year, while an Oklahoma Historical Society archival description independently identifies the home as built before statehood.
Why local history matters now
McCurtain County history survives not only in public monuments and repositories but also in private buildings, cemeteries, photographs, family records and objects. The Whiteman preservation project is an effort to keep one of those physical connections from disappearing.
