The history of McCurtain County is not simply a list of towns. Families connected communities through marriage, government, schools, trade, land, churches and transportation long before the county itself was created.
The McCurtain name
The county was named for the prominent Choctaw McCurtain family, several members of which served as principal chiefs of the Choctaw Nation.
The Pitchlynn and Harris connection
The Harris family’s history connects with the Pitchlynn family, one of the best-known families in Choctaw political history. Henry C. Harris built Pleasant Hill in 1867 and served in Choctaw government.
The Harris-Whiteman household
Mattie Josephine Harris, Henry’s daughter, married William Jourdan Whiteman. Their Goodwater household became the center of a multigenerational family story that continued well beyond statehood.
Community networks survive in records
Marriage records, Dawes cards, probate cases, newspapers, school records, land instruments and cemeteries often reveal connections that conventional biographies omit.
Why the house matters to family history
A surviving family home anchors those relationships geographically. The Goodwater house is not evidence for every family tradition, but it provides a physical center around which documentary evidence can be organized.
