McCurtain County contains layers of history that are easy to miss when the region is viewed only through its modern towns and tourism. Historical markers and preserved properties document Indigenous history, transportation, education, government, family life and early statehood.
Eagletown
Oklahoma Historical Society materials describe Eagletown as an important early settlement and connect the area to Choctaw political leaders and territorial history.
Wheelock Mission and Academy
Wheelock represents major chapters in Choctaw religious and educational history. The mission church and academy site are among the county’s most significant historic places.
Harris House
Built in 1867 by Henry C. Harris, the Harris House documents Choctaw political, agricultural and family history along the Red River.
Gardner Mansion
The 1884 Gardner Mansion near Eagletown is associated with Choctaw Principal Chief Jefferson Gardner.
Idabel landmarks
The county seat includes National Register properties documenting transportation, residences, civic construction and early twentieth-century growth.
Goodwater and the Whiteman Home
Goodwater’s surviving Whiteman Home provides a different kind of historic place: a private family residence connected to the territorial era and later generations. Its preservation campaign is active today.
