RESEARCH TRANSPARENCY
What we know, and how we know it.
This archive distinguishes family history, independent archival evidence and questions that remain under research.
The home and 1893
The Whiteman family dates the home's construction to 1893. Independent archival material from the Oklahoma Historical Society documents the W. J. Whiteman home in Goodwater before Oklahoma statehood in 1907. We do not represent the OHS record as independently proving the exact 1893 construction year.
Goodwater in 1893
A 1923 biographical history says W. J. Whiteman moved from Clarksville, Texas, to Indian Territory and settled at Goodwater in 1893. Historical postal records subsequently identify him as Goodwater's first postmaster, appointed in December 1894.
Property provenance
Research is continuing into deeds, probate records, tax records and legal descriptions that can document the property's chain of title in greater detail. Until that work is complete, this site does not claim that every historical land reference found for W. J. Whiteman describes the present parcel.
Businesses and organizations
Contemporary newspapers document Whiteman's involvement in banking, merchandising, agriculture, a Haworth cotton gin, waterworks and publishing. Territorial incorporation indexes also show several Goodwater corporations before statehood, but we do not attribute those corporations personally to Whiteman unless a source actually names him.
Difficult history
Historical research also includes W. J. Whiteman's involvement in Native American guardianship and allotment matters. These records deserve careful context rather than omission or speculation. The archive will distinguish contemporary records, later allegations, court proceedings and modern historical interpretation.
